Math 4-5

Online resource for Math Focus 4 for students, parents and teachers. I’m still working on getting the password for the grade 5 online teachers resource. This is not the teacher’s guide but extra links for enrichment and practice.

We will be using a free software called Jing to publish tutorials on each of the concepts covered for the week. Please look for the weblinks to these screencasts in the weekly posts.

Grade 4 Students are expected to complete Chapter 11 and Grade 5 are expected to complete Chapter 10 during break from classes…these outcomes will not be assessed this year.

For those families using alternate materials to learn concepts, the following concepts will be covered in Term 3:

Grade 4:

Students will be able to:

  • Explain the properties of 0 and 1 for multiplication and 1 for division.

· Demonstrates an understanding of division (1-digit by 2-digit0 to solve problems by using various strategies

· Reads and records time using digital and analog clocks, including 24 hour clocks

· Reads and records calendar dates in a variety of formats

· Determines and records area of regular and irregular 2-D shapes

· Demonstrates understanding of area by constructing different rectangles for a given area

· Describes and constructs rectangular and triangular prisms

· Demonstrates an understanding of line symmetry by identifying, creating, and drawing symmetrical 2-D shapes

Grade 5:

Students will be able to:

· Uses mental math strategies and number properties to answer multiplication and related division facts to 81.

· Demonstrates an understanding of division (3 digit by 1 digit) to solve problems

· Designs/constructs different rectangles given either perimeter or area or both, and draws conclusions

· Demonstrates understanding of relationship between mm and cm and mm and m units

· Demonstrates understanding of volume by measuring and recording volume (cm3 or m3)

· Demonstrates an understanding of volume

· Demonstrates an understanding of capacity by measuring and recording capacity (mL or L)

· Describes and provides examples of edges and faces of 3-D objects and sides of 2-D shapes

· Identifies/sorts quadrilaterals (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, parallelograms, rhombuses) by attributes

Will it cause problems for my child if I am using an alternate curriculum or workbook for math?

Hi Lori,
I expect that parents will be using a variety of resources to teach their children. The purpose of this course is both to troubleshoot and enrich the curriculum for the parents. As long as students have been exposed to the concepts before they’re taught as per the outline, the use of alternate materials shouldn’t cause any difficulties for students.
I will be providing tutorials on Mondays at 1 pm if there is an interest expressed. These are meant to provide extra instruction on concepts for students and parents could also ask their own questions if they’d like some help in how to teach topics.
The tutorials will be conducted using Elluminate and I’m planning on using this software in class with the kids during some lessons so they become more comfortable with it.

Hi Hedy, I didn’t realize that the math was to be what we are doing at home as far as timeline and topics etc. We are well on our way into our math programs at home. Will it be important for jackson to do that? I had thought the class was going to be math games and extra curriculem not take the place of what we are already doing. Jackson does very well in math and enjoyed the class last week. I don’t mind him doing the odd worksheet etc. but am not really prepared at this point to change our whole math scheme. Will this be a problem or is it something that is workable in this class?

Hi Sheryl,
Please continue to teach the program you are using. It would be helpful to do the chapter reviews to make sure Jackson knows the material. Even if you don’t manage to do the chapter reviews, I will teach the concepts needed for the classroom activities before assigning them. Sorry it took so long to respond to your question. I hope this helps.

Hi Hedy,

I wanted to pass on a website I’ve found helpful for explaining basic concepts of math in the topics of geometery, whole numbers, fractions/decimals/percents and data. They offer a series of factsheets on a given topic to incrementally explain the concept, then there is the option of printing out practice sheets or doing online practice to reinforce the concept.

Also, I really appreciate the tutorials you offer for math 4/5 – it’s been helpful for me to get an overview of what you’re doing in class and dovetail it with our home math programme. Isabelle likes the interaction with the other students, and I think it reinforces what she is learning at home. It’s great for helping her to prepare for in-class tests too. Thanks for offering the on line help!

Hi again!

I forgot one other thing I had wanted to pass on to other parents. I have found the links on your weblog math 4/5 to the Math Focus teacher page to be very helpful. The lessons are explained more fully than in the text book which helps if I am trying to go over something you are doing in class. The index allows me to quickly focus in on the topic I am wanting help with. There are also blackline masters of charts, grid paper, fraction circles, etc as well as printable manipulatives for some of the lessons.

OK, I think that’s really all I wanted to communicate!

I was wondering if you could send me the link for the base ten blocks online. I thought it would be good summer stuff.

Thanks
